History of QAMCAANA

QAMCAANA traces its origins back to the year 1986, when Dr. S. Zaheer Hasan, a dedicated physician, faced a significant challenge. Despite having trained in Ohio for two years and holding a temporary training license, he received distressing news from the State Medical Board that Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC), his alma mater, was not recognized for licensure as it was not included in the 1970 edition of the World Directory of Medical Schools. Undeterred, Dr. Hasan approached the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) that had a specific framework of starting a new alumni chapter. Driven by determination, Dr. Hasan located QAMC graduates across the United States and convinced them to join APPNA. It was no small feat as in-training physicians were not granted full membership at the time. Between 1986 and 1992, QAMCAANA operated as an observer status within APPNA. The critical milestone was achieving a membership of 25 licensed and practicing QAMC alumni—a requirement for full alumni status. Gradually, more graduates entered practice, and the association grew stronger. Today, QAMCAANA stands as a non-profit organization that connects Quaid-e-Azam Medical College alumni residing in the United States and Canada. Our shared commitment to our alma mater and resilience in overcoming challenges have shaped our vibrant community.

History of QAMC

On a momentous day in 1971, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC) came into existence. Its foundation stone was laid by Lt Gen Attique-ur-Rehman (retd), the Governor of Punjab at the time. The college was named after Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the revered leader who played a pivotal role in the creation of Pakistan. His vision for education and nation-building inspired the institution’s name. QAMC emerged as a beacon of hope, dedicated to producing competent healthcare professionals who would serve their communities with compassion and excellence. QAMC’s campus stands as an architectural marvel, designed by the visionary architect Abdur Rahman Hye. Notably, it was the first endogenously designed medical campus in Pakistan, a testament to our nation’s talent. Architectural features include roof vaults, hollow walls, strategically placed windows, courtyards, and cross-ventilation to regulate temperature for natural climate control. The college’s founding Principal, Prof Dr Nawab Muhammad Khan, laid the groundwork for QAMC’s excellence. QAMC’s journey is intricately linked with two prominent hospitals, Bahawal Victoria Hospital and Civil Hospital. These hospitals serve as more than mere buildings; they shape the practical skills and empathy of future doctors. Our educators, administrators, and alumni contribute tirelessly to medical education, research, and community service. QAMC’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment. The halls of QAMC echo with the footsteps of countless students who have imbibed not only medical knowledge but also the spirit of service and compassion.
